The Tree Project:

All the work I have completed in late 2005 and early 2006 directly links to what I refer to as "the tree project". The tree project was part of a task I set for myself beginning in the summer of 2005. I had to locate myself in Western New York and accept it as a place to be. I chose an over-grown open field with a scrappy Shagbark Hickory growing in the middle of it to visit once a week for 14 weeks. Each week I recorded myself (with a video camera) walking to the tree and back. The tree project recordings were worked on from many digital angles and composed into these installations. It is important to know the source behind this body of work.

A Statement:

Body and landscape contain seen and unseen layers. This work makes a connection between the complexities of unseen existence with the visible evidence of external surface. Through recording with a video camera, a study of gesture and place is explored. Inherent physical gestures such as walking are broken down into evidence of internal moments. These moments are directly connected to environment and how one places their body in landscape. Landscape is used as a reference for constant uncontrollable change (weather and season). The body is a reference for so-called controllable change (emotional growth). Former interests from painting surface in these digital constructions. Space, surface, edges, color and mark blend with aspects of performance, creating images that shimmer in between layers of meaning.
