digital prints on paper, varying dimensions, 2004-06 Marks and Suface Little bits of body experience. I am interested in the little things our bodies do as a result of things inside that are unsaid or perhaps do not fit into a lingual vocabulary: chewing nails, chewing pencils, mouth twitches, teeth knashing, eye twitches, shoulder jerks, jittery legs, toe tapping, rocking, eye rubbing, hair pulling. These images are an extension of exploring marks and mark making. The body can be the mark maker, the surface upon which marks take place or both. This place of the body manifesting into these little bits is evidence of a form of communication that does not rely on language. All bodies develop their own reactions to emotions, situations and environment.
Scanning the Body It was my understanding that to be a Narcissist meant to be in love with oneself. In re-looking at the myth through McLuhan, this is true, yet Narcissus didn’t know it was his reflection he was lusting after. Am I a true Narcissist? Is there a new Narcissist in this day and age of digital feedback? Why was I using my body as subject? Was it purely out of necessity and convenience or was it something else? These images remind me of Pre-Raphealite paintings. An exaggerated sense of romance is evoked through light, color and texture. I love and hate these images as much as I love and hate an ongoing argument about romance within myself. I stopped scanning my body but the remainders of this act still surface. The scanner is a valuable tool for gathering textures to combine with other digital methods to create images.
Drawing with Video Stills I find video stills intriguing as subjects. They allow a beginning that already has established perimeters within its form. I don’t think it matters what still to work from, but once one is chosen it is made important. The main characteristic of the still is its incredibly low resolution – to work with it, one has to embrace what it is. I am not interested in making anything appear to be something it is not, I am interested in how the inherent qualities of different things can integrate with each other. With these images I was able to combine digital process, the video still, and my interest in drawing.
